The Kolkata Knight Riders pulled off a marvelous victory in their 200th match of IPL, to get going in the second part of the league in the UAE. An all-round performance from the Knight Riders’ bowlers helped them restrict the Royal Challengers Bangalore to just 92. The batsmen also did not fail with their task at hand. With this win, Eoin Morgan’s men thus move to 6 points from 8 matches. RCB, meanwhile, have 10 points from a similar number of games.
As it Happened
RCB skipper Virat Kohli chose to bat first on winning the toss, standing in his 200th IPL game for RCB. However they were struck early as Kohli got out for a measly 5 runs in the second over. Devdutt Padikkal then formed a slow but steady partnership with debutant KS Bharat. The two took the Royal Challengers to 41 as Padikkal got out on the last ball of the powerplay.
All went completely downhill for Bangalore from there, as they then lost wickets in successive intervals. AB de Villiers got out on a first ball duck, courtesy to an unplayable yorker from Andre Russell. Glenn Maxwell also got out soon giving away his wicket to Varun Chakaravarthy. All that RCB could finally manage in total, were 92 runs as they were all out with an over remaining.
Chasing such a small target, the KKR openers thus went after the bowlers from the word go. Shubman Gill and debutant Venkatesh Iyer powered Kolkata, hitting the ball to the boundary, unlike the Bangalore batsmen. At no point of time did the KKR batsman look in a bit of bother. Although Shubman got out 2 runs short of his fifty, Iyer made sure KKR reached their target comfortably with 10 overs to spare.
Royal Challengers Bangalore 92/10 (19) ( Devdutt Padikkal 22 (20), Andre Russell 3-9 (3), Varun Chakaravarthy 3-13 (4) ) lost to Kolkata Knight Riders 94/1 (10) ( Shubman Gill 48 (34), Venkatesh Iyer 41* (27), Yuzvendra Chahal 1-23 (2) ) by 9 wickets.
