IPL 2021 M53: Chennai Super Kings vs Punjab Kings, Match Report

1 Mins read

The Punjab Kings, gave a wonderful farewell to the 2021 season, defeating second ranked Chennai Super Kings in their last game. The bowlers did the job earlier for the Punjab side, restricting Chennai to just 134. After that, it was time for their skipper KL Rahul to shine, who won the match for his side in just 13 overs, with his unbeaten 98*.

As it Happened

The Punjab captain won the toss and chose to bowl first. The Chennai side thus opened their batting with Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad. A slow partnership up front led them to lose Gaikwad early on for 12 to Arshdeep Singh, as du Plessis continued at the other end. Moeen Ali, the next man then in was unable to score, getting out on a duck after facing six balls, again to Arshdeep.

While du Plessis played the ball watchfully, his partners were unable to provide him with much support. Robin Uthappa and Ambati Raudu both got out to Chris Jordan soon, bringing out skipper MS Dhoni. Dhoni was slow but hung on for a while before Ravindra Jadeja came in for him. Jadeja provided better assistance as the opener reached his half-century in 46 balls and hit some boundaries taking Chennai to 134 for the loss of 6 wickets.

Chasing the target, Punjab were off to a flying start with Mayank Agarwal and Rahul. While Agarwal held on to one end, Rahul fired at the bowlers hitting them all around the park. Lord Shardul Thakur brought back Chennai for a brief bit then as he removed Agarwal and Sarfaraz Khan in the same over. Shahrukh Khan was the next batsman for Punjab, hanging in with Rahul.

Rahul continued with his power-hitting, reaching his 50 in just 25 balls. Aiden Markram replaced Shahrukh at the other end and also attempted to go big. However Thakur struck again, removing him, as PBKS were in close proximity of their chase end. Finally, the skipper spearheaded his team across the line with seven overs remaining and six wickets in hand.
