The Mumbai Indians finished their 2021 season on a high, defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 42 runs. With a slight chance of still making into the top four, MI earlier demolished the SRH bowling, courtesy to Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. However, the needed a miracle to defeat Hyderabad by 170+ runs, that did not occur.
As it Happened
Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first, as it was his only hope of still going into the playoffs. The Mumbai Indians started according to their plans with skipper Rohit and Kishan, as they began the onslaught from the very beginning. Even with the falling wickets, the batsmen did not stop, while Kishan brought up a swashbuckling 16-ball 50.
After the wicket-keeper got out on 84, it was the time for Suryakumar to shine. The Mumbai batsman played slow initially but soon was in the hitting zone. He also hit a 40-ball 82 to help the Indians get close to the 250-run target they had in mind. With small contributions from all the batsmen, Mumbai put up a giant total of 235 runs for the loss of 9 wickets.
Chasing the huge target, the Hyderabad batsmen were also in no terms less than that of Mumbai. Abhishek Sharma and Jason Roy thus piled up runs quickly in the powerplay, bringing up the 50-run stand in no time. However, they lost both the batsmen soon after, followed by the wickets of Mohammad Nabi and Abdul Samad.
Stand-in skipper Manish Pandey and Priyam Garg then formed a partnership as it looked like they may be able to pull off the gigantic chase. But Garg got out on 29, after which no other batsman could complement the captain. Finally, all that the Orange Army could manage was a total of 193 runs for the loss of 8 wickets, with their skipper not out on 69*.
