West Indies Women are facing Pakistan Women in a 3-match T20I series. The first match of the series was held at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua. West Indies women prevailed over their counter-parts to win the 1st T20I. They took a 1-0 lead in the series relying upon Shamilia Connell‘s brilliant performance. Even an unbeaten 69-run stand between Ayesha Naseem and Fatima Sana could not stop West Indies from winning the first game of the three-match T20I series.
Chasing 137 for the win, Pakistan were 57/6 at one point. After that, Ayesha Naseem and Fatima Sana almost pulled off the impossible. Unfortunately, the target proved to be 10 runs too many for Pakistan. All thanks to fine spells of bowling from Shamilia Connell and Aaliyah Alleyne. After losing the toss and put in to bat first, the openers got West Indies off to a solid start. They got through the Powerplay without losing a wicket. Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin put on an opening stand of 65 runs before they were sent packing by Nashra Sandhu and Nida Dar respectively within a span of three balls.
Ayesha Naseem’s effort goes in vain as West Indies women prevailed to win the 1st T20I :
The bowlers put a lid on the scoring in the middle overs as skipper Stafanie Taylor and Kyshona Knight steadied the innings for the Windies. All the batters managed to get good starts but failed to convert it into a big score as West Indies finished their innings at 136/6. Dar was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan, giving away just 15 runs for two wickets in her four overs. In reply, Pakistan got off to the worst possible start, losing opener Javeria Rauf in the very first over. Things went from bad to worse when Shamilia Connell scalped both Javeria Khan and Nida Dar in her next over. Muneeba Ali and Aliya Riaz held the fort for a while before they made the long walk back in consecutive overs.
At 57/6, it seemed all but over for Pakistan before Fatima Sana joined Ayesha Naseem in the middle. The two strung together an unbeaten 69-run partnership but couldn’t get the visitors over the line as Windies won by 10 runs. Connell was awarded the Player of the Match for her fantastic opening spell that accounted for three wickets. The two teams will next clash in the second T20I on 2 July, Friday, at the Coolidge Cricket Ground.
